Starting capoeira as an adult: what your first class is like
Most adults who walk into their first capoeira class have the same three worries: they are not flexible, they are not fit enough, and they are too old to start. None of those keeps anyone out. Everyone in the roda started as a beginner.
What happens in a first class
You will learn the ginga, the swaying step that every other movement comes from. From there come a few basic kicks and the escapes that answer them, practiced slowly with a partner. Most classes finish with a roda: the circle where players meet two at a time, with music and singing around them. As a beginner you can join in as much or as little as you like.
You do not need to be flexible or fit
Flexibility, strength and stamina are what capoeira builds, not what it requires. Movements are taught at a level you can manage and progress as your body adapts. Acrobatics come later, and only if you want them.
The music is part of the class
Capoeira is played to live music. You will clap, answer the songs and, in time, learn to play the instruments. Nobody expects you to sing well; the call and response is designed so that everyone can join in. Our lyrics page has the songs we sing.
What it does for you
A capoeira class works your legs, core and shoulders, and the constant movement of the ginga keeps your heart rate up. It also asks you to think quickly and to read another person, which makes the hour go fast. Many adults stay for the people as much as the workout.
What to bring
Clothes you can move in and some water. Nothing to buy before your first class.
