After-school activities in Thousand Oaks: why kids love capoeira

Thousand Oaks families have no shortage of after-school options: soccer, swim, dance, music lessons, martial arts. Capoeira is the one that combines several of them, which is often why kids who have bounced off other activities stick with it.

Movement, music and a martial art in one

In a single class children kick, dodge, cartwheel, play instruments and sing. Kids who find team sports too competitive, or a dance class too static, often find their place in the roda, the circle where capoeira is played.

Every child plays

There is no bench in capoeira. Every child takes a turn in the roda, and every child sings and claps for the others. Progress is measured against yourself, not against a scoreboard.

Skills that carry over

  • Body control that helps in every other sport.
  • Rhythm from the berimbau and drums.
  • Confidence from performing in front of the group.
  • Respect for partners, teachers and a tradition from another culture.

It fits the school week

The kids class for ages 5 to 14 runs Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:10 to 6:00 PM, at Old Meadows Center, 1600 Marview Dr, Thousand Oaks, early enough to leave the evening for homework and dinner. Conejo Valley Capoeira also teaches through the Conejo Valley Unified School District.

Easy to try

Nothing to buy and no experience needed for a first class: children start in clothes they can move in. Parents are welcome to watch. Read what children get from capoeira, or how it compares with other martial arts.
